Sandy Hook Commercial

With all of the current gun violence talk that has been going on in the media, I chose this commercial because of its message. As students we can relate to the school shootings and threats that have been going around. After the Sandy Hook shooting, the Sandy Hook Promise, a nonprofit charity came out with this video to raise awareness about gun violence. Despite opposing views on guns, the commercial does a great job of appealing to pathos and logos.

This video pulls at my heart strings because as a student, I can relate. The video appeals to pathos because of the tragic shooting at the end. I think many times, as people, we become blind sided to the things around us, just like in the video. As we focus on the love story happening between the two students, we don't notice the little clues that the other student gives about the violent actions he is planning on committing. The ending of the video is surprising and unexpected because we were oblivious to the clues given throughout. The video explores both of the feelings of love and fear.
It appeals to logos because at the end of the video, there is a clear explanation to all the little details that the viewer probably missed the first time watching the video. Once the clues are shown, it's impossible to miss them the second time watching the video back. This this explains how our ignorance can lead to disasters. If someone would have payed attention to this kid, the shooting could have been avoided. Things that may seem minor, may actually be major.

  1. Wow. I'd never seen this. Very troubling, but it's a good message. We need to care for one another. Thanks for this powerful share!
